Cofundadores del movimiento de los adventistas del séptimo día. James fue maestro de escuela y posteriormente ministro que aceptó las ideas adventistas de William Miller (
n. 1782–m. 1849). En 1846 contrajo matrimonio con Ellen Harmon, quien se había convertido en millerista en 1840 a los 13 años de edad. Visionaria, Ellen tuvo más de 2.000 visiones antes de su muerte, las que contribuyeron a guiar a la Iglesia adventista del séptimo día, que se formó en 1863. Ambos predicaron juntos hasta la muerte de James. Ellen continuó hablando de diversos temas, en especial sobre la temperancia, y fue considerada como profetisa por algunos.
